2016 Local Government Elections

The number of seats in the Moqhaka Local Municipality reduced to 45 seats with the 2016 local government elections. The voters roll of the municipality comprised of 81,069 registered voters in the 2016 local government elections. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 17 with 66.34 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 22 with 42.94 %. The average voter turn-out achieved in the 2016 municipal elections was 52.64 %.

Following the 2016 municipal elections, five political parties are represented in the municipality. The African National Congress was returned as the majority party with 25 seats. The Democratic Alliance holds 11 seats; the Economic Freedom Fighters holds 4 seats, the Freedom Front Plus holds 2 seats and the Congress of the People holds 1 seat.

2011 Local Government Elections

The Moqhaka Local Municipality has 50 seats. The voters roll of the municipality comprised of 81,617 registered voters in the 2011 local government elections. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 17 with 66.97 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 24 with 39.61 %. The average voter turn-out achieved in the 2011 municipal elections was 54.76 %.

Following the 2011 municipal elections, five political parties are represented in the municipality. The African National Congress was returned as the majority party with 34 seats. The Democratic Alliance holds 11 seats; the Congress of the People holds 3 seats and the Freedom Front Plus and African People’s Convention holds 1 seat each. There are no independent councillors in the municipality.
